LIVE YOUR HEALTH
In 2010, after completing a rigorous application and site review process by Meals On Wheels America, we were awarded “Exemplary Status” Magnet Accreditation for our outstanding senior nutrition program.
The best Valentine’s Day gift you can give yourself and your loved ones this month is a healthy heart! Here’s the bad news and the good news about heart health:
The bad news: According to the Centers for Disease Control, heart disease is the leading cause of death for American men and women.
The good news: Small lifestyle changes can reduce your risk of heart disease.
The Million Hearts campaign, led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides some simple steps to begin making those lifestyle changes:
- Find a time to talk. Have a “heart to heart” with your loved ones about what they are doing to take better care of their heart. And, talk about ways you can take better care of yours too.
- Encourage healthy eating habits. Choose a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and choose foods high in sodium, sugar and trans fats less often.
- Promote physical activity. Always consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. Remember, any exercise is better than no exercise!
- Check in on health care. When was the last time you had your blood pressure checked? Cholesterol levels? And how about your loved ones?
Meals On Wheels of Northampton County can help you and your loved ones take more control of heart health. Meals on Wheels menus are planned, in part, using principles of the DASH Diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension). The DASH Diet is promoted by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute to prevent heart disease and high blood pressure, and it’s also used to control hypertension.
Like the patterns of the DASH Diet, Meals on Wheels meals are rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products, and they are limited in sugar-sweetened foods, added fats and salt.
