November is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Did you know there is a simple way you can reduce your risk of getting Alzheimer’s? A 2010 study published in the Archives of Neurology found that people consuming a diet high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, fish and poultry, along with lower intake of high fat dairy, red meat, organ meat and butter was strongly associated with a decreased risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.
Now let’s take the above study one step further. How does this translate into a diet? The Scientific Advisory Board of the Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation recommends the MIND diet. The MIND diet stands for Mediterranean-DASH Diet Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay. A 2015 study published in “Alzheimer’s and Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association” found that people who followed the MIND diet closely had a 53-percent reduction in Alzheimer’s risk, and a 35-percent risk reduction was found for those who followed the diet only moderately.
The MIND diet recommends 10 “brain-healthy food groups” and five “unhealthy food groups.” The 10 “brain-healthy food groups” are: leafy greens, other vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, berries, beans, poultry, olive oil and wine. The five “unhealthy food groups” are: red meat, butter and stick margarine, cheese, sweets/desserts and fried foods. The Alzheimer’s Disease Foundation simplifies the diet as follows: “A salad, at least one vegetable, and three servings of whole grains per day, beans every other day, poultry and berries twice a week, and fish once a week.”
In conclusion, the MIND diet follows general principles of a healthy diet, and incorporating MIND diet recommendations can keep you healthy both physically and mentally. It is also important to note that Meals on Wheels of Northampton County follows many MIND diet principles. Meals on Wheels limits butter, cheese, fried foods, sweets and desserts. Meals are rich in whole grains and vegetables. Beans, poultry, fish and berries are also incorporated into our weekly menus. Meals on Wheels helps to keep your mind and body healthy!
