Helen came to Meals On Wheels two years ago. She had been volunteering at another organization and was looking for a change of scenery. Helen, a former Marine who lives alone, likes to be busy. She felt she was not busy enough and wanted to do more. Meals On Wheels was more than happy to have Helen join our volunteer corps and more than willing to keep her as busy as she would like to be.
Almost daily Helen serves as a runner on nearly any route with a variety of drivers. Her favorite part of volunteering is meeting and interacting with all the different clients. She has developed friendships with many volunteers.
Helen who is a “long distance walker” participates in the High Mark Walk for a Healthy Community as a member of the Meals On Wheels team each year and manages to walk all of us into the ground! Helen also did her first sky dive last year with some fellow Meals On Wheels volunteers and is looking forward to her next jump.
Before her retirement, Helen also ran a barber shop in Hawley, PA for eight years, where she was known for her “close shaves”.
Helen wants everyone to know what a wonderful opportunity it is to volunteer for Meals On Wheels. Yes it is true that she is providing a valuable service to our homebound clients but Helen explained that what she receives in return is just as valuable. Delivering meals provides Helen with a sense of purpose and allows her to interact and connect with other people.
